Esports Capture-the-Zone Architecture & Verse Systems

Engineered the competitive tournament game mode for the official Gillette brand activation during Milan Games Week 2023. Serving as the sole programmer alongside a 3D environment artist, I built the entire gameplay loop, real-time scoring mechanics, dynamic traversal systems, and UI in UEFN (Unreal Engine 5 for Fortnite) using Verse.


Core Gameplay: Dynamic Zone Control

The match was structured around a high-intensity Capture the Area game mode. Randomized capture zones appeared across predetermined map coordinates, requiring teams to hold territory, fend off adversaries, and accumulate points over time while surviving escalating combat encounters. The team with the highest point total at the end of the match won.


Technical Architecture & Verse Systems

Dynamic Zone State Machine & Real-Time Scoring

  • Zone Lifecycle Controller: Built an asynchronous state machine in Verse that dynamically selected, activated, and retired capture zones across predefined anchor points.
  • Contested Tick Allocation: Engineered continuous player-presence detection to calculate points per tick for controlling teams while handling contested states when rival teams occupied the zone simultaneously.

Timed Mobility & Transit Gateways

  • Anti-Exploit Traversal Windows: Programmed temporary traversal boosters that activated exclusively during zone transition phases, allowing all teams to rotate swiftly across the arena while locking out boosters during active combat to prevent movement exploit loops.

Dynamic Proximity Respawn System

  • Adaptive Spawn Pipeline: Developed an algorithmic spawn manager in Verse that recalculated player respawns relative to the currently active capture zone, minimizing dead-time traversal while preventing direct spawn-camping.

Pre-Match Lobby & Team Allocation

  • 16-Team Management: Implemented the pre-game lobby flow with custom team selection, automated player balancing, and synchronized countdown triggers before match launch.

In-Game HUD & Real-Time Alerts

  • Verse UI Messaging: Built custom screen widgets and banner alert systems delivering real-time zone announcements, migration countdowns, and live team scoreboards.

Impact & Tournament Delivery

  • 16 Teams on Stage: Seamless multi-team tournament execution during Milan Games Week 2023 with zero match interruptions or state desyncs.
  • Flawless Live Execution: 100% stability across all competitive sessions on stage hardware.
